Angkor Wat, the Mekong, and a country rebuilding itself with extraordinary resilience and warmth.
Angkor Wat alone justifies the trip — sunrise over the temples is one of the genuinely unmissable experiences in travel. Beyond that, Cambodia is cheap, warm and moving in equal measure.
Each region has a completely different character. Here is what to expect.
The Angkor temple complex is one of humanity's greatest achievements — 400 square kilometres of 9th-13th century Khmer architecture. Angkor Wat at sunrise, Bayon, Ta Prohm — allow 3 full days. Hire a local tuk-tuk driver for all three.
The mainland port is overdeveloped but the offshore islands remain beautiful. Koh Rong Samloem's Saracen Bay is the best beach in Cambodia. Koh Ta Kiev is almost completely undeveloped.
The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21 prison) and the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek are essential, deeply sobering visits that contextualise everything else about Cambodia. The riverfront has improved enormously.
Sleepy colonial Kampot on the river — pepper plantations, kayaking, caves with Buddhist shrines. Kep's crab market (fresh crab with Kampot pepper) 25 minutes away is the definitive Cambodian food experience.
Cambodia is very affordable.
Tuk-tuk rides £1-3.
Local restaurant meal £2-4.
Hostel dorm £5-10.
Angkor 1-day pass £37, 3-day £62 (much better value).
The Angkor 3-day pass distributes visitors more sustainably than the 1-day pass. Choose accommodation in Siem Reap that employs local staff. The Cambodian Children's Fund runs ethical elephant encounters near Mondulkiri — far preferable to riding operations.
