The Matterhorn. Car-free perfection, 360km of skiing across three countries, Europe's most iconic mountain backdrop.
Zermatt might be the most visually dramatic ski resort on earth. The Matterhorn is simply everywhere — you wake up to it, ski in front of it, drink Glühwein looking at it. The resort is entirely car-free (electric taxis only), which gives it a tranquility unusual for a major resort. The skiing extends into Italy via Klein Matterhorn, and the Klein Matterhorn glacier at 3,883m is the highest cable car station in the Alps.
Per person per night — prices vary by season and booking lead time.
Take the train from Geneva rather than renting a car — Zermatt is car-free and the train from Visp is scenic and fast. Buy the Swiss Half Fare Card first; it pays for itself in one journey.
