Home of the Hahnenkamm. The most famous downhill race in the world, medieval town charm, and 170km of pistes.
Every January, Kitzbühel hosts the Hahnenkamm downhill — the most dangerous and prestigious race in World Cup skiing. The Streif course is a monster: 65% gradient, jumps, and ice compression. Off-race-weekend the same mountain is perfectly accessible for confident intermediates, and the medieval town of Kitzbühel below is one of the most charming in all of Austria. The skiing isn't the biggest or the highest, but the combination of history, atmosphere and scenery is hard to beat.
Per person per night — prices vary by season and booking lead time.
Visit during the Hahnenkamm race weekend if you can get accommodation — book 12 months ahead. The atmosphere in town and on the mountain is extraordinary, and you'll see the world's best downhillers from metres away.
