Patagonia

The end of the world — Torres del Paine, Perito Moreno, and wilderness on an impossible scale.

Americas · Chile & Argentina

Why visit Patagonia?

Patagonia is wilderness at scale — the southern tip of South America where the Andes meet the Atlantic and Pacific simultaneously, where glaciers calve into turquoise lakes, where condors ride thermals above peaks that look designed rather than formed. It's shared between Chile and Argentina and the best routes cross both. It's not easy or cheap to reach, but it delivers some of the most dramatic landscapes accessible by foot on earth.

Trekkers

The W Trek (4–5 days) and O Circuit (8–9 days) in Torres del Paine are among the world's great treks. The Fitz Roy massif in Argentine Patagonia rivals it for drama.

📸

Photographers

The Torres at sunrise, Perito Moreno's blue ice, condors circling above the glaciers — the photography opportunities are extraordinary and often completely inaccessible elsewhere.

🚣

Kayakers & Adventurers

Kayaking among glaciers in Grey Lake, crossing the ice fields, and reaching places no road can get you — Patagonia rewards those who push beyond the trails.

Where to Stay

Base Yourself in Patagonia

Six distinct areas — each with a different character, price point and experience.

🏔️

Puerto Natales (Chile)

Torres del Paine Gateway

The main gateway town for Torres del Paine National Park — 1.5 hours from the park entrance. Full range of hostels (£15/dorm) to boutique hotels. Gear rental, trekking permits and bus tickets all sorted here. The Singular Patagonia hotel 75km south is extraordinary.

🦁

El Calafate (Argentina)

Glacier Gateway

The Argentine gateway town for Perito Moreno glacier and El Chaltén — a proper town with good restaurants and the most affordable hotels near the glaciers. The glacier is 80km away by bus.

El Chaltén (Argentina)

Trekking Village

Argentina's trekking capital — a village of 1,800 people surrounded by the most dramatic peaks in Patagonia (Fitz Roy, Torre). All trekking routes start free from the village. Hostels and small lodges only. No booking system for trails needed.

🛶

Puerto Montt (Chile)

Northern Entry Point

The northern gateway to Chilean Patagonia — departure point for the Navimag ferry south through the fjords (3 days to Puerto Natales, extraordinary journey). Useful overnight stop.

🌊

Punta Arenas (Chile)

Southernmost City

The most southerly city in Chile and a major gateway for Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica cruises. More infrastructure than anywhere else in the region. Base for penguin colony visits at Seno Otway (closer) and Magdalena Island (better).

🏕️

Inside the Parks

Park Accommodation

Camping inside Torres del Paine (refugios and free camping) — the most immersive way to do the W Trek. Book the EcoCamp or Las Torres refugios 6–12 months ahead for December–February. The experience of waking inside the park is worth the premium.
