Why ski Hakuba Valley?

Hakuba Valley hosted the alpine and freestyle events of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Ten separate ski resorts fill the valley, covering an enormous range of terrain and ability levels. Being on the main Japanese island of Honshu (rather than Hokkaido) means it's accessible by bullet train from Tokyo in 90 minutes — an extraordinary convenience. The snowfall isn't quite at Niseko levels but is still exceptional by global standards.

Stay in a traditional ryokan rather than a Western-style hotel — the experience of sleeping on a futon, eating kaiseki cuisine and bathing in a private onsen is irreplaceable. Matsumoto Castle is a 30-minute bus ride and worth an afternoon.
