The Great Migration, golden-hour game drives, and Africa at its most spectacular.
Kenya is safari at its finest — and the safari experience here is unlike anything else on earth. The Maasai Mara in particular, especially during the Great Migration (July–October), delivers scenes of such scale and drama that photographs genuinely don't do it justice. But Kenya is not only wildlife: Nairobi is one of Africa's most dynamic cities, the coast around Malindi and Diani Beach is spectacular, and the Rift Valley offers landscapes that feel genuinely prehistoric.

The Masai Mara is one of the world's great safari destinations — the Big Five, the Great Migration, and experienced guides who have spent their lives in this landscape.
The light on the Mara at dawn and dusk, the density of predator sightings, and the Great Migration river crossings offer professional-level wildlife photography opportunities.
The Kenyan coast — Lamu, Diani Beach, Watamu — offers world-class beaches, excellent diving, and Swahili culture. Combine with a Mara safari for the complete experience.
Six distinct areas — each with a different character, price point and experience.
The town closest to the Masai Mara's main gate — staying in a tented camp inside or adjacent to the reserve gives dawn game drives and sunset drives impossible from further away. Budget camps from £80/night all-inclusive; luxury camps from £400.
A highland town at the foot of Mount Kenya — the base for Ol Pejeta Conservancy (rhinos, chimpanzees, the last two northern white rhinos on earth) and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Mid-range lodges and a cooler climate than the coast.
The safest and most convenient area to stay in Nairobi — good restaurants (Carnivore for the experience, Talisman for the food), the David Sheldrick Trust and Karen Blixen Museum nearby. Mid-range to luxury hotels.
17km of white sand south of Mombasa — the best beach on the Kenyan coast. Budget guesthouses to all-inclusive resorts. Shimba Hills National Reserve (sable antelope, elephants) is 20 minutes inland.
A UNESCO Swahili island town accessible only by boat — no cars on the island. Traditional guesthouses in coral stone mansions. One of the most atmospheric places in East Africa. Completely different from the safari circuit.
The leafy suburb where Karen Blixen's farm was — now a quiet residential area with good guesthouses and boutique hotels. Adjacent to Nairobi National Park (the only national park inside a capital city) and the Giraffe Centre.
The Masai Mara's high-season game viewing (July–October) coincides with highest prices — the dry season in January–March offers excellent predator activity at 30% lower rates
Safaris booked in Nairobi at the last minute can cost less than those pre-booked from the UK — the local operators compete hard for walk-in business
Kenya's M-Pesa mobile payment system is used everywhere — getting a local SIM at the airport and loading M-Pesa means you can pay at markets, matatus and small shops that don't take cards
Nairobi to Mombasa by the SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) takes 4.5 hours and costs £10 — dramatically better than the old overnight train or the dangerous road
Wildlife photos look better with a proper lens — most wildlife is 20–50m away from the vehicle. A 300–400mm zoom makes an enormous difference to what you can photograph
