Australia and NZ have reversed seasons. Australia (south — Sydney, Melbourne): Dec–Feb is summer — excellent. June–Aug is mild winter. Queensland & NT: June–Aug is the dry season and ideal. April–Nov for the Great Barrier Reef. New Zealand: Dec–Mar for hiking and the South Island. June–Oct for skiing in the Southern Alps. Fiji: May–Oct dry season — reliable sunshine and calm seas for snorkelling.
Working Holiday Visa for Australia (subclass 417) and New Zealand available to most under-30 Western nationalities — apply well ahead online.
Australia has genuine hazards — box jellyfish in tropical waters (Oct–May), saltwater crocodiles north of Rockhampton, and UV that burns in 10 minutes. Take them seriously.
Australia requires driving for anything outside the cities — distances are vast and public transport between states is limited. International driving licence recommended.
New Zealand's Great Walks (Milford, Routeburn, Kepler) require DOC permits booked months ahead. Book the day they release in June.
Fiji's guesthouse islands (Maafushi-style) include Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups — very affordable and far better value than the resorts.
