Where to Go

Breaking Down New Zealand

Each region has a completely different character. Here is what to expect.

🌋North Island (Rotorua and Taupo)

Geothermal wonders — Wai-O-Tapu thermal park (Champagne Pool and Artist's Palette are extraordinary), Rotorua's mud pools and geysers, and Lake Taupo above the volcanic plateau. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing (6-8 hours) crosses an active volcanic landscape.

🏔️South Island (Queenstown and Fiordland)

New Zealand's adventure capital and the most dramatic fjord landscape in the world. Milford Sound (cruise early morning) and Doubtful Sound are extraordinary. Queenstown has every adventure activity known: bungee jumping, skydiving, white-water rafting, jet boating.

🍷Marlborough and Nelson

Wine country in the north of the South Island — Marlborough produces the world's finest Sauvignon Blanc. Nelson has the most sunshine hours in New Zealand and Abel Tasman National Park (3-5 day coastal walk, water taxi access).

🏙️Auckland

New Zealand's largest city — the Sky Tower, the Viaduct Harbour, Waiheke Island ferry (45 minutes, vineyards and beaches), and access to the Coromandel Peninsula.

Travel Responsibly

Eco and Community Tips

New Zealand's biodiversity is devastated by introduced species (possums, rats, stoats) — support DOC funded predator control projects. Freedom camping: follow the Responsible Camping guidelines and use self-contained vehicles only in sensitive areas. New Zealand's waterways are severely affected by dairy farming runoff despite the 100 percent Pure marketing.
