Wine country in the north of the South Island — Marlborough produces the world's finest Sauvignon Blanc. Nelson has the most sunshine hours in New Zealand and Abel Tasman National Park (3-5 day coastal walk, water taxi access).
New Zealand's largest city — the Sky Tower, the Viaduct Harbour, Waiheke Island ferry (45 minutes, vineyards and beaches), and access to the Coromandel Peninsula.

New Zealand's biodiversity is devastated by introduced species (possums, rats, stoats) — support DOC funded predator control projects. Freedom camping: follow the Responsible Camping guidelines and use self-contained vehicles only in sensitive areas. New Zealand's waterways are severely affected by dairy farming runoff despite the 100 percent Pure marketing.
