Backpacking Costa Rica

Central America's most popular backpacker stop — and deservedly so. Wildlife is visible without a guide (sloths in the trees above you, toucans at breakfast), the surfing is excellent, and the national parks pack in more biodiversity per acre than almost anywhere.

Where to Go

Breaking Down Costa Rica

Each region has a completely different character. Here is what to expect.

🌋Arenal and La Fortuna

The Arenal volcano rises above a hot spring landscape. The Tabacon hot springs are the most developed — free natural springs on the Rio Cholin give the same experience. Hanging bridges through the cloud forest canopy give the best wildlife spotting.

🐊Tortuguero

Accessible only by boat or small plane — a canal system through Caribbean jungle, one of the world's most important sea turtle nesting sites (July-October). Night tours run by community guides who return money directly to conservation.

🏖️Manuel Antonio

The country's most popular national park — white-faced capuchin monkeys regularly join beachgoers, excellent Pacific beaches. Book accommodation well ahead for dry season (December-April).

🏄Montezuma and Nicoya

The alternative, less developed Pacific coast — Montezuma's waterfalls, Cabo Blanco nature reserve, and Santa Teresa's world-class surf breaks. Yoga retreats and a genuinely international long-stay community.
