Laos

The most laid-back country in Southeast Asia — river towns, jungle treks, and waterfalls in near-total peace.

Backpacking Laos

The slowest, most relaxed country in Southeast Asia. Vang Vieng is chaotic but the rest — Luang Prabang, the 4,000 Islands, the Bolaven Plateau — rewards everyone who takes the time to get there.

Where to Go

Breaking Down Laos

Each region has a completely different character. Here is what to expect.

🏛️Luang Prabang

The most beautiful town in Southeast Asia — a UNESCO World Heritage city at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. The morning alms-giving ceremony (tak bat) is sacred — observe respectfully. The Kuang Si waterfalls 30 minutes away are extraordinary.

🕌Vientiane

The world's most relaxed capital — French colonial architecture on the Mekong with almost no traffic. The COPE Centre (about landmine victims) gives essential context. The Buddha Park (30 minutes out of town) is surreal and wonderful.

🌊Vang Vieng

Excellent kayaking, cave tubing, rock climbing and hot air ballooning against one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Southeast Asia (limestone karst mountains above the Nam Song river). The adventure activities are the real reason to come.

🌿4000 Islands

The Mekong delta at the Cambodian border — river islands where the pace of life is entirely different from anywhere else in Laos. The Irrawaddy river dolphins in the surrounding waters are critically endangered and genuinely worth seeing.

Travel Responsibly

Eco and Community Tips

Laos has the most UXO (unexploded ordnance) contamination per capita in the world from the 1960s-70s American bombing campaign — stay on marked paths outside urban areas at all times. The COPE Centre and MAG both accept donations. The Mekong river dolphin population (fewer than 100 remain) is critically endangered — choose boat operators who do not approach them closely.
