Where to Go

Breaking Down Sri Lanka

Each region has a completely different character. Here is what to expect.

🦁Cultural Triangle (Kandy and Sigiriya)

Sigiriya Rock Fortress (UNESCO, 1,200-year-old palace on top of a volcanic plug, the finest ancient site in South Asia outside India), the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, and Anuradhapura's sacred Bodhi Tree. Wild elephants on every road in the jungle around Sigiriya.

🐘Yala National Park

Sri Lanka's most famous wildlife reserve — the highest density of leopards anywhere in the world (genuinely easy to spot), elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and 200 plus bird species. Visit weekdays to avoid Colombo day-tripper crowds.

🏖️South Coast (Mirissa and Unawatuna)

Sri Lanka's finest beaches — Mirissa for whale watching (blue whales December-April, spinner dolphins year-round) and Unawatuna for the classic beach scene. Galle's Dutch colonial fort (UNESCO) is 10 minutes from Unawatuna.

🍃Hill Country and Nuwara Eliya

The tea country — the train from Kandy to Ella (the most scenic railway journey in Asia) passes through the heart of the tea estates. Ella has excellent hiking (Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock) and the Nine Arch Bridge.

Travel Responsibly

Eco and Community Tips

Sri Lanka's elephant population is under pressure from habitat fragmentation — choose wildlife lodges built outside elephant corridors. Many large tea estates are owned by international companies — smaller family-run estates give more revenue to local workers. Whale watching: strict regulations limit boat proximity — choose licensed operators only.
