Hot air balloons at dawn over fairy chimneys — one of earth's most otherworldly landscapes.
Cappadocia is one of those destinations where the reality genuinely exceeds the photographs — and that's saying something given how extraordinary those photographs are. The fairy chimneys, cave churches, underground cities and rock-carved landscapes of central Anatolia are the result of millions of years of volcanic activity and thousands of years of human habitation. The dawn hot air balloon flights over it are among the most beautiful experiences available anywhere on earth.

A sunrise hot air balloon over fairy chimneys, cave hotel dinners by candlelight, and some of the most surreal landscapes on earth — deeply romantic.
The landscapes here look designed rather than natural. Dawn light on the rock formations, balloon-filled skies, and underground cities all demand serious camera time.
Cappadocia was one of the early centres of Christianity — the rock-cut churches of Göreme contain 10th-century frescoes that survived intact for a thousand years.
Six distinct areas — each with a different character, price point and experience.
The main base — surrounded by fairy chimneys and within walking distance of open-air museums and the best viewpoints. Cave hotels at every price point from £30/night dormitories to boutique cave suites with private terraces. The most atmospheric place to stay in Turkey.
A larger town with more restaurants, shops and a more lived-in feel than Göreme. Beautiful old stone houses converted into hotels. Better infrastructure and more evening options. 20-minute drive to the main sites.
On the Red River — famous for its pottery workshops and a slightly off-the-beaten-track feel. Quieter than Göreme and cheaper. The Saruhan Caravanserai is nearby. A good base if Göreme feels too touristy.
The highest village in Cappadocia — built around a rock castle with panoramic valley views. Fewer tourists than Göreme, excellent boutique hotels, and the valleys stretch below you in every direction. Museum Hotel here is one of Turkey's finest.
A village built around another rock fortress, quieter than all the above and very local in character. Some excellent small guesthouses. Walking access to Pigeon Valley without tour groups.
A former Greek village with extraordinary carved stone mansions — most converted into small pensions. Almost no tourists, genuinely beautiful architecture and very cheap. Best for independent travellers wanting solitude.
Hot air balloon flights cost £120–200 but the prices vary wildly — book through Royal Balloon or Butterfly Balloons directly, not through hotel concierge who add 30%
The balloon flights are weather-cancelled frequently in winter — book refundable rates only and have a backup day built in
Göreme's cave hotels get genuinely cold at night even in summer — the thermal mass of rock means room temperatures drop sharply after midnight
The Love Valley hike (3 hours circular, free) gives better fairy chimney scenery than any tour — go at 7am before the ATV groups arrive
Turkish breakfast (kahvaltı) at a proper lokanta rather than your hotel costs £3–5 and is significantly better than what most hotels serve
