Kyoto
Japan

The soul of Japan — 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines and the last geisha districts.

East Asia · Japan

Why visit Kyoto?

Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years and the weight of that history is felt everywhere — in every temple garden, every stone lantern path, every wooden machiya townhouse. While Tokyo is Japan's future, Kyoto is its past, and it is extraordinary.

The key is timing and early starts. Fushimi Inari's 10,000 torii gates at 6am before any other tourists. The Arashiyama bamboo grove in the first light. The Gion geisha district at dusk. Kyoto at these moments is completely unlike any other city in the world.
