Skiing above a megacity. A proper mountain resort 25km from central Almaty with 4,500m peaks behind the pistes.
Shymbulak is one of the most unusual ski experiences in the world — a genuine, well-developed ski resort rising above the enormous city of Almaty. You can have breakfast in a Kazakh cafe in central Almaty and be on a chairlift at 2,260m within 25 minutes. The ski area is modest (25km of pistes) but the scenery is extraordinary, the lift infrastructure has been modernised, and combining a Kazakhstan city break with skiing is a genuinely unique trip proposition.
Per person per night — prices vary by season and booking lead time.
Almaty is genuinely fascinating and wildly affordable — spend at least two days exploring the Green Bazaar, the MEGA Almaty mall (for the contrast), Kok-Tobe cable car viewpoint, and the Soviet-era architecture. Skiing is the complement, not the main event.
