Tignes is the unsentimental, hardcore choice in the Espace Killy. Higher, wilder and cheaper than Val d'Isère, it has a Grande Motte glacier that enables year-round skiing, and the off-piste potential is extraordinary. The resort itself is functional rather than beautiful — purpose-built in the 1960s — but nobody comes to Tignes to look at the architecture.

Stay in Tignes-les-Brevieres at the bottom — the original village with a proper French atmosphere, much cheaper, and a bubble lift connects you up to the network.
